No one ever expects to experience a dental emergency, but it’s more common than you might think. 1 in 6 Americans will experience an oral health emergency this year. If you’re one of the unlucky few, instinct might tell you to head to the closest hospital, but that may not be the best idea. With time of the utmost importance, here’s when you should skip the ER and head to the closest emergency dentist.
Hospital ER VS Emergency Dentist
Hospitals can perform life-saving treatments and handle the most serious medical emergencies, but they aren’t equipped for oral health situations. While they can prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers, they can’t treat the underlying problem. Therefore, it’s best to contact a dentist unless you’re experiencing:
- A Medical Emergency
- Uncontrollable Bleeding
- Swelling Affecting Your Airway
- Broken Jaw
- Severe Laceration
- High Fever
How to Handle a Dental Emergency
If the unexpected should happen, don’t panic! Here’s what you should do if you have a dental emergency:
- Rinse Your Mouth: Carefully rinse your mouth with water to remove debris and blood.
- Access the Situation: Get a good look at the situation to determine the appropriate first aid, like placing a knocked-out tooth back in its socket.
- Control Bleeding: Bite on a piece of gauze for 20 minutes to control bleeding. Change the gauze as needed.
- Manage Pain: Take an over-the-counter pain reliever or anti-inflammatory to reduce discomfort.
- Rinse With Salt Water: Rinse your mouth with salt water to kill harmful bacteria. It will also reduce inflammation and pain.
- Eat Carefully: Avoid any hard or chewy foods until after you’ve seen your dentist. Choose foods that require minimal chewing. Skip anything hot or cold to prevent sensitivity. Chew slowly and carefully on the opposite side of your mouth from your painful tooth.
Contact Your Dentist Right Away
Don’t wait to contact your dentist. Delaying treatment can cause a small issue to turn into a big problem, like the loss of your tooth. They’ll get you into the office quickly for an examination to determine an appropriate treatment. They’ll explain everything, so you know exactly what to expect. Your dentist will stop your pain and restore a healthy smile, so you can enjoy your day.
