Gum Disease Treatment Before Cosmetic Dental Work

September 16, 2024

Healthy gums compared to diseased gumsIf you’re not happy with the way your teeth look, cosmetic dentistry can give you a picture-perfect smile. You have more treatment options than ever before. Your cosmetic dentist will help you choose the right procedure to reach your goals. However, if your gums aren’t healthy, you’re going to have to put your smile transformation on hold. Here’s why you may need gum disease treatment before any cosmetic dental work.

Healthy Gums Matter

Your gums are just as important as your teeth. They support your pearly whites and protect their root surfaces and underlying structures from bacteria. They are the foundation for a healthy, beautiful smile.

Your gums must be healthy before any elective service. With 50% of adults having a form of gum disease, it’s normal to require treatment before cosmetic dentistry. Although cosmetic procedures will make your smile look better, the infection will eventually cause irreversible damage if it is not addressed first.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar buildup, most often from poor oral hygiene. The gums will become red, inflamed, and may bleed easily when brushing or flossing. These are signs of gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease.

With no treatment, the infection will progress to advanced periodontitis. Advanced gum disease can destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, causing them to fall out. Bacteria from the infection may also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of several health issues, like heart attacks and Alzheimer’s.

Restore Your Gum Health

If your dentist detects gum disease during your consultation, they’ll create a personalized treatment plan to stop the infection. Scaling and root planing are often used to treat gum disease. Your dentist will use a special dental instrument to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line. They’ll use another dental instrument to smooth your root surfaces to prevent future buildup. Your gums will reseal to your teeth to protect them.

Although gum disease therapy may add another step to your treatment plan, it’s necessary to ensure you achieve the long-lasting results you want. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, you can keep your gums healthy.
