If you’ve ever had to visit your dentist due to a dental emergency, you know how stressful it can be. Having to stop in the middle of a meal, a meeting, or a night out on the town to drive to your dentist’s office is never ideal. Even so, some dental emergencies are stranger than others. Read on as we learn about five of the strangest dental emergencies to ever happen!
#1: Super Glue Gone Wrong
You should never try to fix damaged or broken dental restorations on your own, but one person decided to try. After losing a dental crown, she tried supergluing it back onto her tooth. As a result, she ended up sticking together the wrong teeth. She also got superglue all over her throat and the roof of her mouth.
#2: Tomato Plant Procedure
A patient paid a visit to their emergency dentist complaining of a toothache. Their dentist said they would need to undergo root canal therapy and began treatment immediately. During the procedure, the dentist discovered something they didn’t expect to see: there were seeds with tiny plants growing out of them lodged deep in the patient’s gums! After speaking with the patient about the discovery, they determined that the seeds were from a tomato.
#3: Forgotten Root Canal
Root canals are a common dental procedure and have more than a 95% success rate. Even so, a British man had some unlikely side effects when going in for root canal therapy in 2005. Since undergoing the procedure, he hasn’t been able to retain memories for more than 90 minutes. Doctors have spent years trying to determine how this happened, but they’re still stumped.
#4: DIY Palate Repair
Some dental emergencies can be easily repaired by a dentist. Even so, some patients try to fix the issue themselves, as was the case with one man. He later visited his dentist with a severe mouth infection. His dentist discovered that the man had stuffed a hole in his palate full of wads of tissue and swapped them out for fresh ones once per week. Ironically, the terrible infection this caused only put his oral health in worse condition than if he has visited his emergency dentist in the first place.
#5: Calculus Bridge Catastrophe
Improper brushing and flossing allow plaque and tartar to build up on your teeth. Eventually, this may create what’s called a calculus a bridge between the teeth. This issue requires intervention from a dentist, but one patient with this issue took matters into his own hands. He vigorously brushed his teeth to remove the calculus bridge and soon learned that the bridge was the only thing keeping several of his teeth in place. This causes most of them to fall out within minutes.
Though dental emergencies sometimes can’t be avoided, regular dental visits and an at-home oral hygiene routine can go a long way. Be sure to visit your dentist with any oral health issues you have to avoid becoming the star of one of these odd stories!
