Smiling older womanA broken denture isn’t just an inconvenience. It is a dental emergency! You rely on your dentures for more than just a beautiful smile. You need them to chew nutritious foods for your wellness. They also affect your ability to speak clearly and confidently. If you’ve broken a denture, don’t panic. Here’s what you should do until you see your dentist.

A Broken Denture is a Dental Emergency

You should never continue to wear a broken denture because it can make the damage unrepairable. You can also be at risk of oral injuries from any sharp pieces. It is best to stop wearing your denture right away. If possible, wear an old denture.

Common Causes of Broken Dentures

Dentures are made of durable materials to last for many years. However, they aren’t indestructible. Dentures can break from accidents, like dropping them on the bathroom countertop or floor.

Not to mention, your dentures go through a lot of use over the years. Wear and tear can weaken them over time. If you eat a lot of hard, crunchy, or chewy foods, you can put additional wear on your dentures.

Dentures can also be weakened from harmful bacteria caused by poor oral hygiene. No matter the reason, you can’t go with no teeth. It’s best to contact your dentist right away for an appointment.

Can a Broken Denture be Repaired?

Although you can purchase over-the-counter repair kits and find several DIY videos online for denture repair, leave the mending for professionals. You can cause more damage. In addition, do not use any glue or adhesives because they can contain toxic ingredients. Not to mention, they don’t hold up well in moist environments, like your mouth.

Your dentist will get you into their office to examine your denture. Based on the extent of the break, they may be able to repair it. If not, or your denture is older, you’ll need a replacement. Don’t worry, your dentist will create the personalized plan you need to restore a beautiful, functional smile.
