Why Cavities Between Teeth Are Hard to Detect

When most people think about cavities, they picture dark spots or holes on the chewing surfaces of teeth. However, cavities can also develop in the tight spaces between teeth, where they are much more difficult to notice.

These are called interproximal cavities, and because they form in areas that are hard to see, they often go undetected in the early stages. In many cases, patients do not realize there is a problem until the decay becomes larger or starts causing discomfort.

Food particles and plaque can easily become trapped between teeth, especially in areas that are difficult to clean thoroughly. When bacteria feed on leftover sugars and starches, they produce acids that gradually weaken enamel and create cavities.
